Introduction
BinCal ("we", "our", or "us") operates the bincal.co.uk website. This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data when you use our service and the choices you have associated with that data.
Data We Collect
When you use BinCal to subscribe to a bin collection calendar, we collect and store:
- Your postcode — required to locate your address and identify your local council
- Your UPRN (Unique Property Reference Number) — required to fetch collection data specific to your property
- Your selected address — for reference only
How We Use Your Data
We use your data solely to:
- Generate and serve your personalised iCal calendar feed
- Fetch bin collection schedules from your local council
- Keep your subscription up-to-date with the latest collection dates
Feed Access Logs
When your calendar application requests your feed, we record:
- The date and time of the request
- The User-Agent (which calendar app or device made the request)
- Whether the request succeeded
These logs help us diagnose issues and monitor service health. We do not use this information for tracking or profiling.
Data Retention
We retain your subscription data indefinitely to maintain your permanent calendar feed URL. If you no longer wish to use BinCal, you may stop subscribing to your feed — we will eventually remove unused subscriptions after 12 months of no access.
Access logs are retained for 90 days for debugging and monitoring purposes.
Data Security
Your data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in our secure database. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect against unauthorised access. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
Analytics
We use Umami to collect anonymised usage statistics, including pages visited, general geographic region, device type, and browser. Umami is cookieless — it sets no cookies and does not track you across sites or sessions. No personally identifiable information is collected.
Umami is self-hosted on our own infrastructure. No analytics data is shared with any third party.
Third-Party Services
BinCal fetches bin collection data from your local council via the UK Bin Collection Data project. We do not share your data with these services — we only request publicly-available collection information.
Your Rights Under GDPR
You have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of your data
- Rectification — correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — request deletion of your data
- Portability — receive your data in a structured format
To exercise these rights, contact [email protected].
Children's Privacy
BinCal is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware of such collection, we will take steps to delete such information.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy periodically. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
